Among the many fascinating aspects of our consciousness, is a function called “interoception”. Interoception is a critical component of our self-awareness. It refers to our ability to perceive and understand the internal sensations of our body, allowing us to maintain balance, recognize and regulate emotions, understand signals from our bodies, and more.
It is the ability to sense the internal physiological condition of the body (e.g., pain, huger, heart rate).
Ouch!
I’m hungry!
My heart is beating too fast!
Interoception provides us with information about purely physical needs, such as hunger, but it also relates to emotions. If you’ve experienced a “gut feeling” then that was interoception! A sensation of “butterflies in your stomach” may inform you of a feeling such as excitement or nervousness. These physical sensations related to emotions provide highly valuable information and can influence our decision-making.
Physiological Shock Trauma, Developmental Trauma and Chronic Stress can cause a disconnect between one’s brain and body. This leads one to override or ignore their internal cues until they become overwhelming. RRP provides a gentle way to reconnect with these subtle internal signals, fostering a deepened trust in one’s own physical experience.
The Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP) helps improve one’s interoception by using specially composed soundscapes to safely stimulate the nervous system, which in turn reconnects the brain with the body and improves the awareness of internal bodily states.
The core mechanism involves shifting the autonomic nervous system
from a state of stress, defense or shut down . . . towards a state of safety, calm, and restoration.
This is achieved by stimulating the restorative (dorsal vagal) branch of the vagus nerve in a controlled manner. When the body feels safe, it can better access its internal signals.
Additionally, RRP uses proprietary Sonocea® Sonic Augmentation Technology, which embeds infrasound and specific acoustic parameters (like tempo) that mirror and encourage the body’s natural homeostatic rhythms, such as heart rate variability, respiration, and digestion.
This rhythmic alignment (entrainment) helps restore a sense of internal order that chronic stress often disrupts. Again, when a sense of internal order is restored, one feels safe. And when one feels safe, one can more easily access internal signals.
Why is interoceptionso important?
Put simply; by improving the ability to notice bodily needs sooner and interpret them accurately, individuals develop stronger self-regulation skills. This increased awareness allows them to respond to their body’s needs more effectively (e.g., resting when tired, eating when hungry) rather than reacting from a state of dysregulation (sleeping to disconnect from themselves, eating to satisfy some other unmet need, or drinking heavily to deaden the sensations).
Ultimately, the Rest & Restore Protocol helps individuals become more embodied, present, and better able to regulate their emotional and physiological state, which makes them more accessible to other therapeutic modalities.
